A lack of cloud skills
Simply replicating your existing operating environment in the cloud actually offers little advantage over your existing infrastructure. All of the same bottleneck and failures you currently experience will still be present. And when you are being billed according to resource usage, configuration mistakes are likely to be costly.
You will need specialist cloud skills to re-engineer your systems to take full advantage of the available services, eventually moving to a serverless or containerized operating model. But if you don’t have access to those skills, your migration project is unlikely to realize the full range of available benefits—and your monthly operating costs are likely to increase, too.
Although the cloud vendor assumes responsibility for keeping the physical infrastructure layer operational, your team will still need to ensure virtualized servers, applications and servers are functioning correctly. Do you have confidence that your team are able to fully support users under the new operating paradigm?
If your business does not have access to the required skills, you are probably not yet ready for the cloud. On a positive note, cloud skills are available—if you can afford them. So It may be that a lack of skills will only require a temporary delay to your cloud plans.
