If It Moves, It Will Break — CDS

Thanks to our extensive hardware lab testing, CDS engineers are very good at looking at hardware failure rates and their root causes for a wide range of storage systems, servers, and network components. Sometimes we’re asked which part is most likely to fail, and there is only one correct answer to that question.

If it moves, it will break.

Mechanical wear and tear

From the bearings in your hard drives, to the fans in your power supplies to the servos in your tape auto-loaders, every one of these parts has a finite lifespan. No matter how well lubricated the contact points, any parts that move against each other will wear– and fail.

This fundamental truth is most easily seen in hard disk drives which routinely fail. Completing 10-15,000 revolutions every minute of every day for years will inevitably cause wear and tear– and drives do fail relatively regularly. Fortunately, magnetic disk storage is cheap enough to purchase replacements without a problem.

Don’t get caught out

Wear and tear becomes more of an issue when dealing with older or post-warranty systems. These systems have been in service for longer, so there is a much greater risk of mechanical failure in all of their components. Obtaining OEM-approved spares is also harder, particularly if the array in question is officially End of Service Life (EoSL).

If an older part fails, can you get hold of a replacement before your SLAs are compromised?

The good news is that CDS can help. We maintain a multi-million-dollar parts inventory held in several strategically located warehouses across the globe. We have every spare for every client system we support ready for delivery quickly and seamlessly.

And every spare is fully OEM-approved, too.

CDS customers know that they are covered for every part failure – not just disk drives and PSUs. And they also know that every part we fit is fully compatible with their system for optimal performance.
